I have fine AND thin hair. There's nothing wrong with that, but for me personally? Nah, I've never liked it. I don't mind too much that it's quite fine, I just wish there was a bit more of it growing out me 'ead. Since I was about 15 I have loved big hair, and ever since I've been trying to find ways of making fine hair look as big and as voluminous as poss. Back then, I did a pretty shitty job, I'm not gonna lie. My hair was already in god awful condition, and I thought the answer to big luscious locks was to backcomb the crap out of it, followed by half a can of cheap hairspray. All I achieved through that method was the bird nest-esque look.

I think it's a lot easier to make my hair look a bit thicker after two years of nursing it back to perfect health. Here are my weapons of choice:

First off, I cut my hair short. I literally spent 6 years+ trying to grow it out long. I finally got it to almost boob length, the longest my hair had ever been in my life, by far. So what do I go and do? Get it chopped back to length it was that I hated for sooo long. Funny, cos I love it now. Shorter hair definitely appears thicker than long hair, especially if styled well. I also got it all chopped to the same length, which helps with the thickness perception. But it still looks thin af without my three key products.

The Batiste Heavenly Volume Dry Shampoo was a big game changer for me. I'd had my eye on it for a while, but it took me time to actually buy it. It's more expensive than the other Batiste dry shampoos, and tbh I didn't think it would do much more in the way of volume than the others already did. Oh, how I was wrong. I spray a small amount of this onto my roots after my hair has been washed and dried. I say small because you really don't need a lot. The volume this stuff adds to your roots is crazy. If you're somebody who doesn't like the feeling of product in your hair then this ain't for you. You can feel that it's there. It doesn't feel horrible, it just gives your hair a lot more grip, which my hair deffo needs. I use an even smaller amount the following days if I need to absorb any oil up.

I've actually stopped straightening my hair as I do not think it helps to make it look big and voluminous. I'm now totally on curling now. I either quickly wave it with my straighteners, or if I have a bit more time, curl it with my old Mark Hill tapered curling wand (as I have done here).

The Batiste Stylist Texturizing Spray is another new favourite. I haven't tried any other texturizing sprays so I can't make any comparisons, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that this one is pretty darn good. After I have curled/waved my hair, I'll spray some of this onto the roots and lengths and ruffle my hair with my fingertips. This instantly gives it more volume. I do still backcomb, but obvs no where near as much as my 16 year old self. I use The Wet Brush, and backcomb each of the curls a tiny bit.

I then either flick some of my hair over to create a voluminous side parting (as I have done here), or tie the top third up to create the standard half up top knot. I then finish off with a light spray of the Fudge Urban Iced Raspberry and Vanilla Hairspray. Bit more expensive then your standard Tresemme, but you literally need the smallest amount, and it smells amazing.

  1. Your curl is really pretty. I miss my curly hair, I can't wait to chop my hair off to shoulder length so my natural curly hair will grow back.
