The Truth About Beauty | 6 Myths Uncovered

There's so many tips, tricks and beauty hacks flying around, your mum tells your one thing, your bff tells you something different, and your beautician - well she shares with you something completely obscure.  So let's try and set the record straight, and debunk a few of those sneaky little myths.

Steam will open up your pores
FICTION
Who knew?  I can't say that I haven't stood with my head hanging over a bowl of steaming water, in desperate attempts to give my skin  deep cleanse.  But alas, believe nothing you have heard - pores do not have muscles, and cannot be opened and closed whenever you choose.  Don't fear, there is some good news - steam/hot water does loosen the dirt inside of pores, so a steam cleanse isn't completely off the cards.

Toothpaste rids your face of blemishes
FICTION
Another so called 'beauty hack' that I can remember my 14 year old self doing - so young, so naive, and toothpaste on spots is so not the way forward.  Sure, the menthol in it can calm down inflammation, but it will also irritate, much like all of the other ingredients of toothpaste.  Ya better off sticking to a cream made for blemishes, and avoiding products specifically for those pearly whites!

Cold showers make your hair shine
FICTION
Similar to our friends, the pores, we cannot control our hair cuticles.  Hairdressers love to spread this one, but unfortunately, it ain't true.  Our hair contains no living cells, so it won't react to cold water.  At least this means that we don't have to be standing under a very delightful stream of cold water to make our hair shiny, right?  Now you know.

Shaving causes your hair to grow back thicker and darker
FICTION
Hair is naturally its widest at the base, and narrows down to a point.  When you shave, you are giving your hair the chop at the widest part, and it continues to grow this wide - a nice little explanation for why it appears thicker and courser.

Wearing makeup everyday is bad for your skin
FICTION
Just force yourself to be good - take it off every night!  Honestly, the culprit of your skin getting worse is more likely to do with not having a consistent skincare routine, and sleeping with a face full of makeup.  I've even managed to train myself to cleanse and moisturize after I've stumbled in from a night out - every time.  Points to me?

You can get rid of cellulite
FICTION
I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this in a previous post.  Your cellulite ain't going nowhere.  Ignore all of the creams, lotions and potions that claim to rid your body of the stuff - pure BS.  Their effects last a few months at most, and massaging devices such as the bloggers favourite body brush?  They basically 'iron out' fat cells, so they don't look as prominent - but again, not a permanent fix.  Even exercise can only reduce the appearance of cellulite.  Sorry ladies, your just gonna have to learn to love it!

  5. The same with stretch marks. haha There's not miracle cream that will rid you of them. If you get them they are there to stay or until they kinda fade. (:
